It sounds as though the starter motor is sticking - the pinion is not being
thrown into engagement with the flywheel ring gear. This could be down to a
weak solenoid, or the pinion is sticking on the motor shaft rather than
sliding freely.
A genuine starter from Vauxhall is in the region of £190 +VAT for an
exchange unit. This does not include fitting, and the prices may have
changed in the year or so since I last fitted one.
