No one can resist fangirling over Dolly Parton - even when the hard
questions are on the table.
The country music icon appeared on "The View" just hours after her
highly-anticipated series "Heartstrings" debuted on Netflix Friday
morning where she spoke with the cast about everything from her latest
projects to feminism to Meghan McCain's photo of Dolly on her
nightstand.
"Is that weird," McCain asked the singer.
"Kinda."
"I'm a woman and I support women"
Earlier this week, Parton picked up two Grammy Award nominations for
her recent collaborations - one with contemporary Christian music duo
for KING & COUNTRY and another with Linda Perry for a song for the 2018
Netflix movie "Dumplin'."
Prior to her nominations, the 50-year Grand Ole Opry veteran cohosted
the Country Music Awards alongside Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire
as part of the award show's theme around celebrating female artists in
the genre.
"There's a lot of really talented women out there and we should give
them a chance to do what we do," she said on the show Friday morning.
"It's wonderful that we're getting the chance to show what we can do
and we're being accepted."
"I started in the old days, it's different than it was back then. I
really think that we're coming along."
Resident instigator Joy Behar recapped the icon's work and reputation
for empowering women and challenged her on why she dances around the
"feminist" label.
"Does being feminine makes me a feminist? Does being common make me a
communist?," Parton quipped.
"You're an outspoken, successful, independent woman who writes songs to
empower women," Behar added.
"Well, I guess I am," Parton responded. "I don't like labels, but I'm a
woman and I'm very supportive of women. I love men, don't get me wrong
- I've always had them in my home - but I think we all should be able
to express ourselves."
"I just love everybody. I just try to find the God-light in people and
play to that. I try not to be judgmental. I just think we should love
each other ...and accept everyone as they are."
Her latest project "Heartstrings," an eight-episode, Dolly Parton
discography-inspired series, is now streaming on Netflix.
